Social life, school, screens
It's so hard seeing children struggle

How to Connect with and Motivate your Kids and Teens

Learn the time-tested, service-based ways to get others to reach their full potential

It’s not quite how you imagined it, is it? In your life, you have always succeeded in what you put your mind to. Maybe you had to try, fail and try again, but you’ve always reached your goals. It’s just who you are.

But as a parent
well, it looks a bit different when taking care of your kids at home.

Maybe it’s the lingering effects of the pandemic.  Maybe it’s this busy season, this tricky age (doesn’t it always seem to be a busy season or tricky age?). It just feels like it’s not working.

And it’s hard. Harder than it should be. It’s hard to watch your kids feeling awkward with their “friends” and not getting along at school. It’s hard fighting about homework, motivating them to help out at home, competing with a screen for their attention. Seeing them struggle with, well, everything. At least, it feels like everything.

The thing is, you know they’re so capable. You know they’re great kids. You know they can thrive.

So what’s going on?

Learn the time-tested, service-based ways to get others to reach their full potential

It’s not quite how you imagined it, is it?   As a person, you’ve always found success in what you set out to do.   Maybe you had to try, fail and try again (and again!), but you always get there in the end.   It’s just who you are.

But as a parent
well, it looks a bit different with the kids at home.

Maybe it’s the lingering effects of the pandemic.  Maybe it’s this busy season, this tricky age (doesn’t it always seem to be a busy season or tricky age?).  But usually, it just feels like it’s not working.

And it’s hard.   Harder than it seems like it should be.  It’s hard to watch your kids feeling awkward with their “friends” and not “getting along” at school.   It’s hard battling about homework, trying to motivate them, getting them to help out at home, competing with a screen for their attention.   Seeing them struggle with, well, everything.  At least, it often feels like everything.

The thing is, you know they’re so capable.   You know they’re a great kid.  You know they can thrive.

So what’s going on?

Most of us have received the wrong messages about what kids need to thrive

In fact, much of how we raise kids doesn’t work.

We’re given rules and checklists and systems that are supposed to work for every kid. We apply so many external frameworks and constructs to our children’s development – reward charts, timelines, benchmarks and objectives – that we forget that our children are designed to develop on their own.

In effect, it’s like we’re forcing beautiful plants to grow — by pulling on them. Instead we should be nurturing them with the right mix of sun, soil and water.

Many parenting practices today do not cover the fundamentals of what kids need – what people need – to reach their full potential. Just a little support is required to help children use their gifts and discover their abilities in the world.

This is true for us, as parents as well.

It’s not about applying outside forces, rules and constraints. It’s about encouraging what’s already inside to grow. Our kids just need the right support.  YOU, as the parent, just need some support.  Some guidance.

Most of us have received the wrong messages about what kids need to thrive

In fact, a lot of things about how we approach raising kids today are broken.

We’re given rules and checklists and systems that are supposed to work for every kid.  We apply so many external frameworks and constructs to our children’s development – reward charts and timelines and universal benchmarks and objectives – that we lose sight of the way our children are naturally designed to develop on their own.

In effect, it’s like we’re trying to force these beautiful plants to grow — by pulling on them.  Instead of simply offering the right mix of sun, soil, water and space for our particular plant.

A lot of current parenting practice is not built on the fundamentals of what kids need – what people need – to grow and develop to their full potential, in their own way, in their own time.   We all have what we need inside us; we usually just need some support to learn to use our gifts and abilities in the world.

This is true not just for our children, but for us, as parents.

It’s not about applying outside forces, rules and constraints.  It’s about encouraging what’s already inside to grow.  Our kids just need the right support.   YOU, the parent, just need some support.   Some guidance.

It’s not about being bossy

I read the classic parenting book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk when I was about 9 years old. Then I used it to “boss around” my mother, correcting her when she did something differently than what the book had suggested. Yes, I was that child!

My friends had been calling me bossy for years. I told myself this was a good thing: “I have to be bossy because things need to be done right!”

In fact, decades later, after visiting my best friend who had a child the same age as mine, I wrote her a long letter – thirty pages of well-intentioned, customized parenting advice. She appreciated my intention, but our friendship didn’t last long after that.

Then, in my own family, when my eldest son became a teenager, he had a brutally honest conversation with me. He told me how disconnected and controlling I had been, even though I had the best possible intentions for my own children and those I taught at school every day.

He opened my eyes in a way I am profoundly grateful for. He led me to realize I had to find a better way if I really wanted to impact those I served.  After some soul-searching, I found inspiration in the spiritual practices I’ve followed since childhood.  Since then, I’ve found a way that really works and leaves both parent and child feeling happy, confident and empowered.

So what does it really mean to be a leader?

Life has shown me that being a leader is not about being bossy.   It’s about being a guide.  It’s not about telling others what to do.  It’s about showing them that they already know, illuminating what’s already there inside them.  Validating their abilities, personalities and perspectives, and challenging them to grow to the next level.  At all ages and stages – parents and children, and between and beyond.

The best leaders in our workplaces, in our communities, are the ones who not only manage but motivate and develop those who rely on them for direction.   You know this.  If you’re here, you’re one of those leaders.

But think about how much training or schooling or mentoring or guidance you’ve had to get where you are today in your career, in your life.  A lot, probably!

But when it comes to parenting, even if you have done other parenting courses, read stacks of books and heard all the advice (solicited or not)…  there’s often something missing.   Or, actually, something off.   Because most modern parenting advice focuses on the perspective of the parent, rather than understanding the child.

I’m on a mission to change that.   We can do better for our kids.

Meet Mother Gopi Gita

Mother Gopi Gita is a parent, educator and executive coach.   The secret to her remarkable ability to support developing children of all ages, and their families, lies in the inspiration she takes from her lifelong practice of Bhakti yoga and its deeply loving approach to life and relationships.   Applying the principles of this philosophy as a carer or educator means truly seeing and hearing children – it illuminates the way to meet their needs, allowing them to grow to reach their healthiest and most successful potential.

Gopi is the vice principal of TKG Academy, a private school in Dallas that focuses on leadership, service and immersive, intrinsically motivated learning.  She is also an educational consultant for the ISKCON Ministry of Education and the founder of the Bhakti Leadership Academy, through which she and her team mentor teenagers throughout North America in leadership principles grounded in eastern spiritual practices.   Over the past 20 years as an educator and parent coach, Gopi has served more than 1000 children, mentored more than 500 parents and personally guided more than 100 educators.  She is trained in the Waldorf and Montessori philosophies of education, and has a degree in child psychology.

Gopi has practiced Bhakti yoga since childhood, attending morning temple before school for 18 years while growing up in America.  To this day, she practices daily mantra meditation, now with her husband and two young adult sons in Dallas.

As vice principal, her favorite part of each work day is the time she spends in the classroom.  Her meditation of choice is observing the little ones on the playground, and she welcomes the little dramas that never fail to arise.  She cherishes each conflict and challenge as an opportunity to practice and empower the children directly, using the same strategies she shares in her parent coaching practice.

Onlookers often remark on how quickly children, under Gopi’s guidance, rebound from conflict and create collaborative spaces.  Gopi’s techniques are rooted in loving acknowledgement of children’s fundamental emotional needs, and they can be implemented immediately.  The positive impact is usually felt within moments, reinforcing the child’s confidence and an authentic connection with their parent or educator.

When not teaching, coaching or consulting, Gopi also loves singing, cooking, binging Netflix, and drawing henna designs.

A practical spiritual practice

When my eldest son showed me how I needed to change the way I led, I looked deep inside to find another way.   And what I found had been there all along.

It’s inside you, too.   We all have what we need already inside us, including our children.   True leadership is about helping others discover and develop their own strengths, gifts and abilities.

In a profound turning point in my life as a parent and an educator, I realized the spiritual principles I learned in my childhood were the ideal way to face the challenges I encountered as a parent and educator.  You can learn to lead this way too, and so can your children.  Children and parents learn from and teach each other.

Every interaction I have now is infused with those principles and practices, and they work beautifully because they are rooted in loving service.  Age-old meditations, mantras and teachings are still vibrantly relevant today – and you may be surprised at just how effective they are at calming tantrums, soothing sibling rivalry and coaxing surly teens away from their screens.

A Playground Story

Robert: “Mother Gopi Gita! Mother Gopi Gita!”
MGG: “Yes? What’s wrong?”

Robert: (very dramatically) “Chris keeps throwing the ball at me and it really hurts, and I tried telling him, but he just won’t stop. It’s hurting my head and my arms and, look, I even have a bruise!” (Holds out his arm with nothing on it.)

(I resist the urge to jump up. I resist the urge to run and get Chris and raise my voice at him and give him a time-out.)

MGG: “Oh my. Sounds like you’re really upset! You even have a bruise on your arm. Let me see it.”

(Leaning toward him, giving care, showing concern. I noticed no bruise.)

Robert: “Well, it doesn’t really hurt that much. It’s just that I keep telling him to stop throwing it at me!”
MGG: “Hmm. It sounds like you’re frustrated because he doesn’t seem to hear what you’re trying to ask him.”
Robert: “He won’t even listen to me! Anyways, it was my ball first! I had it before him!”

(The story changes as he sees that Chris isn’t getting in trouble.)

MGG: “Oh, I see! You’re feeling upset because you were playing with the ball before Chris had it. Now you want it back?”
Robert: “Yeah! And he’s not letting me play with it! All the other kids keep grabbing it away. Even when the ball comes my way and they’re not even letting me grab it first!”

(I look to where Robert was playing with all the children and realize they’re in the middle of a game. Robert is frustrated that the other kids are faster than him. This has nothing to do with Chris.)

MGG: “Looks like you wish you could grab that ball first! Seems like you want to be faster.”
Robert: “Maybe I can ask Lindsey to join my side. She’s really fast. Maybe she can get the ball for me.”

(As he’s speaking, he runs off back toward the game, ready to solve his own problem.)

*** *** ***

Consider how an adult inexperienced in empathy would have jumped up to correct Chris for bothering Robert.  This example happens countless times in homes, on the playground, and in classrooms.

Can you appreciate the consequences of acting without empathy in a situation like this?

And can you imagine the potential of listening WITH empathy, and acting accordingly?

What does greatness mean to you?

What do we really want for our kids?   Of course we’re all unique.  But after working with hundreds of parents, carers and educators, what I know for sure is that we all want to see thriving children who:

Have good friends

And are confident in a variety of social situations

Understand their own emotions...

And can empathize with others

Can handle a reasonable level of conflict on their own

And know when and how to ask for help, without drama

Are genuinely interested in learning

And feel motivated to do well, for their own benefit

Enjoy being productive and responsible,
away from screens

Enjoy being productive and responsible, away from screens

And happily help with age-appropriate tasks and chores

Nurture healthy, loving relationships with their families

And have a sense of greater purpose, connection and spirituality

If that sounds dreamy, that’s because it is. It’s also possible.

I know because it’s my reality in my family, and I’ve helped countless families make it their reality as well.

What is Bhakti?

Gopi’s personal spiritual roots are in Bhakti yoga, an eastern
spiritual practice based upon loving service and leadership.

Sharing strength & skills

I’ve been an educator and a parenting coach for many years and I’ve seen a lot.  But just a few years ago, my own son needed emergency surgery for a life-threatening brain tumor.  (Yes, it was a big deal, and yes, he’s fine now!)

But this time spent in the hospital made me realize just how much other parents were suffering, all the time, every day.   And how much more I could be helping them.

Because in those moments, I found strength in my spiritual beliefs, in my mantras and meditation practice, and in the grounding principles of family leadership that I teach.  It got me through and I’m blessed to say that my son is healed, healthy and thriving today.

But during the weeks in the hospital, I saw so many other parents in so much pain.  And I realized that that was just one place, in one building, in one city
I knew there must be so many others.

I wanted to find a way to share my tools, my ideas, my sources of strength and comfort with more parents. Many more.

So I created Leadership Parenting.

You can transform your family life - start here

Leadership Parenting is built around a few fundamentals. To begin with, you'll learn:

Why feeling like you want to quit the one job that’s yours for life doesn’t mean you’re broken

(It’s more common than you might think!)

The top five misconceptions that make that “I quit” feeling way worse than it needs to be

(We’ll bust those right away.)

What your imagination has to do with making you a better parent

(Nope, it’s not about playtime!)

How to figure out your Parent Personality

(And why it’s so important.)

How to understand your kids' expectations

(And align with them better for more peace in your household.)

What humans’ emotional equivalents of food, water and shelter are and how to use them to help your child make more friends, be more interested in school and help with the dishes

(Yes, our 3 Core Needs are that powerful!)

What would it mean to you to step into leadership in service of your family?

My passionate, sincere wish is for you as a parent, and for your children, to know that you have everything you need within you, to make every interaction exactly as you want it to be.

What’s special about the Leadership Parenting approach, and why it works so well, is that it embraces the individual strengths of each person, each soul, while acknowledging our universally human emotional needs.

We establish a solid foundation from which to create space to celebrate uniqueness – for each person to grow into their full potential, whatever that means for them.

True leadership is about illuminating a path for others to grow, develop and thrive.

When you learn to lead your children in this way, it goes without saying that they’ll blossom and bloom.  And in turn, your family life will flourish.

And you may very well find yourself wonderfully surprised, as many of the other parenting leaders I work with have, at how much you improve as a leader in other areas of your life.

This program is made

For you and your family

With the proven strategies I teach, you’ll immediately begin learning to:

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

When you truly see and hear your children, and respond accordingly, you show them how to see and hear you.  Communicating effectively makes everything so much easier because everyone feels understood and no one feels like they need to fight or struggle to stand out.

CULTIVATE INTRINSIC MOTIVATION

The holy grail of raising successful children.   When your children want to learn, to help, to do the right thing
so many arguments simply disappear and your children are set up for lifelong success.

PROMOTE PURPOSE

Life is better with a reason for being, no matter how old you are.   When children make meaningful contributions to their world, they’re happier and more satisfied.

OUTSMART THE SCREENS

Ever heard of flow?  It’s that state of blissful concentration on something that you find so absorbing that hours pass in an instant.  And it’s not just for grown-ups.

KEEP BOUNDARIES CONFIDENTLY & COMPASSIONATELY

Saying no in the right way is sometimes the most loving thing you can do.

BRING OUT THEIR NATURAL LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

By leading your family in a loving way, you’re showing your children how to do the same for others.  This will make them an attractive friend, colleague and partner their whole life long.

What would it mean to you to see your children showing up as leaders in their lives?

Parents whose children are struggling know all too well the sleepless nights, the arguments, the worry, the conflict.  The difficult conversations, the loneliness, the helplessness.

The wondering why your child seems to be the only one who can’t make friends.  To concentrate on their lessons.   To just get ready without a fuss.

Is it a stage?   Is there an end in sight?  Or is this just the way it is until
 when?

Without a plan or a proven path, many families feel frustrated for far longer than they need to – following the same rules, repeating the same “expert-approved” phrases over and over
and getting the same disappointing results.

But there is another way.

If this is you – and it is you, isn’t it?  Or you wouldn’t be here.

If it is, please know that the answer is already in you.  It always is.   I can help you find it, and use it to transform your family.

Here’s what happens when you decide to

level up the way you
lead your family

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

It’s NOT about control. Or power. Or one right way. It doesn’t assume that your child is manipulative or clingy or whiny or needy and must be fixed. It’s not about “us” vs “them”. It IS the most comprehensive approach to parenting that I know of. It offers answers from A to Z, for every single conflict that you may have with your child, at any age or stage. It’s about lovingly and consciously meeting the needs of another human being in a way that gets them to get better at living their life. It’s a practical, tactical application of beautiful eastern spiritual philosophy, and it works better than anything else I know of.

In most cases, yes!   But even though it may feel like magic when you use these techniques, it’s not.   My techniques work so well because they’re about working WITH what children need as people.   But while there are themes, each child is different.  You must do the work of observing your child, seeing and hearing and feeling into what they need, and then acting accordingly.   When you do this work, when you lead in this way, you will see positive results – and they are often immediate.

Leadership Parenting Fundamentals Course is a 14-week program. You’ll want to set aside an hour or two at the beginning of each week to go through the materials, and allow a bit of time spread throughout the week to ensure you are observing, reflecting, implementing and processing what you’ve learned so that you can make the most of our Cohort Group Fundamental Calls.

Many participants experience tangible benefits right from the start. The program is a comprehensive 2.5-year course designed to deliver both immediate and lasting results. However, the true transformation and sustained success depend on your commitment to implementing the processes and your willingness to confront and overcome the challenges that lie ahead. This program is structured to empower you with the skills and knowledge you need for a transformative journey towards long-lasting success. Parents can level up their leadership from fundamentals to intermediate, to signing up for a lifetime partnership with a trusted advisor. With a trusted advisor you will receive support on a month-to-month basis, for as long as you need support.

The principles of Leadership Parenting can be applied even with the youngest children.  Of course the way we communicate with and relate to babies and toddlers is different from the way we relate to older children.  But even the youngest children can sense when they are truly seen and heard, and this sets the stage for smoother development and richer relationships as the years go on.

Family dynamics evolve over time, but it’s never too late to show your children how very much you care about the kind of person they’re growing to be.   Young adults are capable of so much, but they are also still very much in need of the guidance of a loving parent.   Making this effort to improve your relationship and your role in their life is a wonderful way to create a loving bond that keeps growing deeper and richer as time goes on.

Ultimately, the principles shared in Leadership Parenting are about nurturing people.  No matter the “labels” on your family members, the strategies and techniques I teach can help improve your relationships.

Leadership Parenting will show you how to truly see and deeply listen to your child.  I’ll show you how to meet your child where they are and guide them from there – so the way you lead them will be just right for their specific needs.

There are many ways to be a leader.  It’s not about being bossy or authoritarian, about shouting from the rooftops or banging fists on the table.  It IS about setting healthy boundaries, and healthy expectations, and about knowing your audience and interacting with them accordingly – while respecting those boundaries and expectations.  Even if you’re quiet, or shy, or introverted, or simply exhausted.   Through even the smallest actions as a leader and a parent, you are setting an example of what it means to show up in the world in a way that creates positive interactions with others and invites positive energy into their life.

One of the problems with modern parenting advice is that it’s often one size fits all, but it’s simply not true that one set of rules and guidelines will work for everyone.  When you follow Leadership Parenting principles, you guide your child to develop to their fullest potential, whatever that means for them.   They will flourish with the right support.  It’s not a bad thing to have high expectations – we human beings are amazing.

No. Leadership Parenting transcends any religious, sectarian, or organizational affiliations. It represents a non-sectarian philosophy inspired by the universal principles of bhakti from the East, making it accessible to people of all faiths or no faith, regardless of their background or beliefs.

I will host the Fundamentals Calls at our private Zoom link.   On each call I’ll offer more in-depth perspective, anecdotes and guidance on what you’ve been learning in the current modules.   There will be time to discuss what you’ve observed and practiced following previous modules, as well as how to build on your learnings with the upcoming practical assignments.

As soon as you join, you’ll have access to all of the video modules so you can get started right away.  But it’s important to move through the modules in order as they build on each other, and do give yourself time to process what you’re learning and put it into practice before you move forward.

The recordings of the coaching calls will all be available in your membership portal – in most cases, within 24 hours.  And of course you retain lifetime access to the membership portal so you can revisit the sessions when you’d like to be re-inspired.   The two Foundation Calls must be attended before you’re invited to the monthly “Leaders’ Lab” Q&A calls.

While Leadership Parenting is not an individual coaching framework, two “Power Session” individual coaching calls are included in the program, along with monthly “Leaders’ Lab” Q&A calls.   If you have another question, you can email gopi@leadershipparenting.com and I’ll respond in the best way I can.  It’s my intention that every parent finishes their experience feeling empowered to make the positive transformation they desire in their family.

Of course.   Questions can be sent to our team in advance of the calls by emailing gopi@leadershipparenting.com.  If you think of a question during the call, you can submit it using the chat function,
